Moderate. Monastery approaches are cobbled, stepped and frequently steep, and Sevanavank sits at the top of a long staircase. Expect 4–8 km of walking a day. The final approach to Gergeti Trinity Church is by four-wheel drive; walking it is optional and takes around two hours uphill. Lake Sevan sits at roughly 1,900 m, which some travellers notice as mild breathlessness.
Sep–Oct: 17–24°C in Tbilisi and Yerevan, considerably colder in the mountains and close to freezing at Gergeti. Low rainfall. The clear autumn air gives the best odds of a full view of Mount Kazbek and Mount Ararat, both of which summer haze often hides. A single day can span twenty degrees, so layers are essential.
