Easy to moderate. Expect 4–8 km of walking a day, with steps at Sintra's palaces and throughout the old quarters. Lisbon and Porto are built on hills and paved with polished limestone cobbles that become genuinely slippery when wet — shoes with real grip matter more on this trip than fitness does. No hiking and no altitude.
May–Oct: 18–28°C, with September the sweet spot — the Atlantic is at its warmest, the summer crowds have gone and the Douro harvest is under way. Very little rain outside winter. Porto and the north are wetter than Lisbon in every month, which is precisely why the north is so green.
